Thanks a lot for your comment, Jerry. Your appreciative feedback has positively boosted my energy!
And thanks for the advice too. I will make it my goal in the context of the project I'm currently involved in, seriously wounded from several years of patches and lack of attention.
The team's talented and great, but the customer beliefs, sayings and decisions (typical for a project between steps 3 and 4) damage their moral. I feel the key is to change the customer perception!

Nicely done, Pascal. And you've put your finger on several of the most important actions if you want long-time-horizon improvements.

The one thing I would add to each of these actions is to learn to "sell" them as short-term actions. Show the customer how refactoring, for example, often reveals bugs that would cost him/her immediately. Same for the other actions, because it's just too hard to sell on the basis of long-term benefits--especially when the customer is in a short-term panic for some reason, like keeping his/her job.
